The Professional Wrestling Circus: A Breeding Ground for Conservatism

On April Fools Day, the biggest event of the professional wrestling calendar, Wrestle Mania 23, takes place in Detroit. As such, this is the opportune time to look at an industry that is so political, it is considered more political than the world of party politics itself.

Professional wrestling is a dog-eat-dog world that is so cutthroat that there are no trade unions in the industry. The results and some elements of the matches maybe predetermined and choreographed, but the infighting behind the scenes between the wrestlers and the promoters and among the wrestlers themselves is more real than you can imagine. The off-screen feuding, backstabbing and power plays are far more vicious and bloodthirsty than both the on-screen battles and the most bitter grudges in party politics. The wrestling promoters are all corrupt without exception, while nepotism among both the promoters and wrestlers has been running rife since the existence of this dysfunctional circus.

However, despite these problems and others such as rampant drug abuse caused be frequent and relentless injuries, poor pay for 90% of wrestlers in the business and a short life expectancy, the public and Conservative party can learn a lot of positive virtues from this misunderstood industry. Even the laziest wrestler works harder than the average employee does by putting their bodies through such tremendous punishment, that if it occurred in most other working environments, it would cause a public scandal. The wrestlers are expected to be multifaceted performers that are as proficient at acting, public relations and even psychology as they are at what is in effect a form of manual labour. As such, many wrestlers develop into libertarians so fervent in their beliefs, that even Baroness Thatcher would be proud of them and see their trade as a character-building and self-reliant example to the rest of us.

Some of these wrestlers have even made or are in the process of making a successful transition from the wrestling world to the rather calmer environment of party politics. The classic example of this was the surprise 1998 gubernatorial victory of the infamous wrestling icon Jesse “The Body” Ventura in Minnesota. Governor Ventura enjoyed a popular term in office before he decided to stand down in 2003 to prepare the ground for a presidential campaign next year. No doubt, the political influence of retired professional wrestlers will gradually grow during the future within the United States and their conservatism could be as vital for the future of free-market capitalist society as actor Ronald Reagan was in winning the Cold War for the West.

The Best That Money Can Supply: Membership of the House of Lords

There were a few eyebrow's raised on Wednesday evening when a 100% elected second chambers was the clear choice of the Commons. "It was a victory for democracy". "It was a result of tactical voting". "The Tories went for the extremes so as to mire Gordon Brown in a Constitutional quagmire when he takes office". "The Labour whips 'suggested' that reforming might lead to loans being recalled". All the skullduggery that brings the best and worst of British politics to the fore.

100%, 80% or even the 50% as proposed but the Labour front bench. Wrong wrong all wrong. The only correct percentage of elected members of the House of Lords is zero. 0%.

Exactly the same percentage as for nominated members.

The 'Cash for Peerages' scandal is not a scandal at all. It simply shows that people tend to forget the bigger picture. They are blinded by ideological hatred and/or simple jealousy. Those left, those right, and that large bunch in the middle. While in theory the idea of a bicameral government is great, in practice it will do us no favours. While the White Paper states that the "primacy" of the Commons will remain, it is rather wishful thinking to assume that the Lords will be a mere "complement" rather than a "rival". With the legitimacy of being elected nothing other than an impasse will result.

It's been eighty years since any government has really understood what is most appropriate. Lloyd George, and his bagman Arthur Maundy-Gregory's, ideas were just a little before their time. The Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act of 1925 must be repealed immediately. If not we will be left with a second chamber filled with party hacks, failed MPs and fools. The House of Lords would be nothing more than a political remedial class and a home for the senile.

Membership of the House of Lords should be put up for sale. The only conditions would be that you were a British citizen without a criminal record (sorry Jeffrey). Sure, back in the 1920s those who could afford the £1.24 million, in today's money, for a baronetcy, would have most likely inherited their wealth. But today's millionaires are more likely to be the results of hard graft; a la Mike Ashley of Sports Direct or Nigel Morris of Capital One. Not Lord Fauntleroy. What could be more meritocratic that a chamber of people who have proved their ability through the accumulation of wealth. Not quite Plato's Philosopher Kings, more Philosopher advisers...

Gordon Brown’s lack of a serious challenger for the leadership, yet apparent widespread unpopularity with the electorate has left Labour MPs with a serious dilemma.

The facts of the Labour leadership race are stark; Gordon Brown is the overwhelming favourite to win the race, strong odds-on with any bookmaker you care to mention and spoken of in parliament and the press as the certain victor. It would be a shock of tumultuous proportions were he not to inherit the crown when Tony Blair finally steps down. However, as more and more polls pit Brown rather unflatteringly against David Cameron, and hint at strong antagonism from voters and large Tory leads, Labour MPs find themselves damned if they do, and damned if they do not. Seemingly, Brown cannot lose the Labour leadership race, but cannot win a General Election.

Last week’s ICM poll in the Guardian gave Cameron’s Conservative’s a 13 point lead over Brown’s Labour, and for months research has suggested he would be less popular among women and floating voters. Brown polarises the electorate, pushing Lib Dems and waverers into the lap of the more consensual and empathetic Cameron. Furthermore, personal attacks, of the like seen this morning when senior backbencher and sworn Brown enemy Frank Field described his accession to the leadership as “like letting Mrs Rochester out of the attic. He has no empathy with people.” have hardly helped.

Field and others have called from a heavyweight Blairite, such as John Reid or David Milliband, to challenge Brown. The former seems handicapped by what is becoming another annus horriblis for the Home Office, and the latter by his youth and inexperience. Labour MPs who privately feel the Brown juggernaut has far too much momentum, in terms of Union support and ‘careerists for Brown’ sewn up votes, appear to be correct.

Milliband would appear to have little to gain if he can’t win, and he is the only candidate likely to offer something genuinely different to the Brown’s brand of brooding moralising. It is almost certain there will be no heavyweight challenger, and almost certain no-one from the left has any chance of usurping the Chancellor. The juggernaut truly is unstoppable. Labour MPs problem is that it appears headed for an exit marked ‘Conservative majority’.

Once again the least important issue to the nation of Lords reform has come to the top of the Governments agenda. The Leader of the House of Commons, Jack Straw, has unveiled the Governments oh so original and courageous proposals this month. Gone is the old and out of date House of Lords that we have now and in its place we will have a shining new House that will be, wait for it, part elected.

How can this be any better then what we have now? The Government came to Lords reform with a pledge, and I quote from the 1997 Labour Manifesto, “to make the House of Lords more democratic and representative.” Now I ask you how does this plan go about doing that? What it really says is you can have elections to the upper house so long as we can still appoint our buddies who have paid us millions of pounds. If half an appointed Lords can still be democratic then what is wrong with the fully appointed chamber we have now? If large scale appointment, however, is undemocratic and unrepresentative then the only answer can be elections by some form not a half and half approach which this Government seems hell bent on.

If the Government really wanted to have a democratic second chamber it would push for a fully elected body with the power to delay and some times resist the lower house. This would remove the issue once and for all from the scandal of cash for honours that is surrounding the PM at the moment. But what Prime Minister, or back bench MP for that matter, wants to see a rival created in the western end of the building? The House of Commons has got too complacent in its position as the dominant chamber in Parliament and has no desire to see a young rival that can claim as good if not better democratic mandate created in the wake of the House of Lords. Senators would challenge the system in a way that has not been seen for almost a hundred years and no one in Whitehall wants that!

This is a huge waste of time and looks set to be another Hunting Bill fiasco in which vast amounts of government time are spent on bringing in legislation that is not fit for purpose and makes Parliament a joke in the country. Those people you talk to in the street who care about Lords reform would place it low on their priorities. If the Government really want to reform something how about the NHS or the Police!

Reforming Devolution

Nine years ago, the people of Scotland and Wales voted in favour of Labour’s proposals to devolve power from Westminster to new elected national legislature bodies. The Celtic peoples voted in favour of these proposals based on promises from Labour that these new legislatures would give both the Scottish and Welsh populations a greater say in the affairs of their nations than they had enjoyed up to that point from London.

Nine years on, it seems that far from giving greater power to the people, devolution has instead created another impersonal, even redundant tier of bureaucracy, increased financial waste and inefficiency.

Since no party is proposing to abolish these devolved bodies for democratic and political reasons, the devolution settlement must therefore be reformed. The most practical reform would be to introduce a system of what I would term ‘dual representation’ whereby Celtic MPs would also serve as AMs or MSPs. General Elections and Westminster By-elections would double-up as Scottish Parliamentary and Assembly Elections. It is ridiculous that thanks to devolution, there are now two elected positions for the same tasks, especially since some AMs and MSPs also sit in Westminster such as David T. C. Davies in Monmouthshire, Wales.

It would also be wise to merge the Cabinet positions of Scottish and Welsh Secretaries along with their departments with the portfolio of the Leader of the House of Commons, who would then act as a liaison official between Westminster and the Hollyrood and Cardiff Bay legislatures.
Such reforms would not only make the devolution settlement work more efficiently for the Celtic peoples and strengthen the legitimacy of the devolved bodies without undermining the political supremacy of the Commons (due to General Elections enjoying higher voter turnouts than the devolved equivalents), it would also help to solve the West Lothian Question.

Further speculation this week regarding David Cameron’s past use of drugs has again opened the question, what is and is not an acceptable past indiscretion for a leading public figure?

Ever since entering the Conservative Party leadership race in late September 2005, David Cameron has assiduously defended his “right to a private life before politics”. Allegations of drug use, both at University and now at Eton, have thus far caused a media storm but appeared to have done little to damage him politically. Both friend and foe have supported his clarion call for the freedom to enjoy youthful indiscretion so long as moral probity is exercised once in public life.

But is this distinction reasonable, and if so how great an indiscretion is acceptable? Cameron has drawn a clear line between behaviour in office and before it, confirming he has not taken drugs since being an MP. This does appear an important distinction; the principle that a public figures current private peccadilloes reflect their ability to govern with firm judgement and moral probity is broadly reasonable. However, were a leading politician to have committed a far more serious offence than smoking soft drugs casually when at school it would raise media and public pressure to come clean to a far greater level.

Smoking Cannabis recreationally, especially the weak Cannabis of twenty five years ago, would seem unlikely to change many British voters opinion of a politician. Mr Cameron’s defence of not commenting on his life before politics would therefore appear sound and politically shrewd; part or total confessions would only escalate the story with more questions. The distinction between private and public personal lives also seems ultimately fair; a nice balance of allowing a private citizen liberty and not scaring off potential political leaders, while offering the electorate a window into the inner character of our elected representatives.
